SEO Best Practices - Part 1

Best Practices For SEO Using VPCart

1) Meta Title

a) The Meta Title is the HTML code that specifies the title of a certain web page (i.e., the title of the product in this case). It appears at the top left corner of your browser when you visit a web page. You are advised to keep it short (below 55 characters and normally, Google will display anywhere between 55 - 66 characters). Normally, we recommend the same entry in "Name" to be entered in "Meta Title".

b) For starters, the Meta Title should always be typed with the first letter of each major word capitalized, in the style known as Title Case. This means everything is capitalized except for smaller words like "for", "is" and "a". For an example, Breaking To Saddle And Harness - by John Pinnell can be entered as Breaking to Saddle and Harness or Breaking to Saddle and Harness by John Pinnell or Breaking to Saddle and Harness - by John Pinnell.

c) Make sure every page on your site has a unique Meta Title and try your very best not to repeat the Meta Titles.

d) Be specific. Remember, your Meta Title has to draw in viewers from the search results pages, so the Meta Title should tell your viewer, as well as the search engine, what each page/product is about specifically.

e) Pay attention to length. Google will crop your Meta Title on the results page after 55- 66 characters, but Yahoo won't crop your title until 120 characters. To get the best results for both of these prominent engines, try to make your Meta Title have a primary and secondary length. Try to get a full sense of the main focus of the site within 55 characters, and then secondary information to read in Yahoo. Make sure that you don't leave words or phrases cut off in the middle. Find shortcuts too, such as using "&" instead of the word "and".

f) Be sure to include at least one primary keyword in the Meta Title of each page.

2) Meta Keywords

a) Meta Keywords are a specific type of Meta Tag that appear in the HTML code of a Web page and help tell search engines what the topic of the page is all about. The most important thing to keep in mind when selecting or optimizing your Meta Keywords is to be sure that each keyword accurately reflects the content of your pages.

b) You can enter the entries entered in the field called "Keywords" in "Meta Keywords".

c) Ensure that the keywords you have selected are relevant to the page/product in question.

d) Generally, do not use more than 10 Meta Keywords for a single product/page. Anywhere between 5 and 7 is recommended.

3) Meta Description

a) Meta descriptions are HTML attributes that provide concise explanations of the contents of web pages. Meta descriptions are commonly used on search engine result pages (SERPs) to display preview snippets for a given page.

b) It is extremely important in gaining user click-through from SERPs. These short paragraphs are a webmaster’s opportunity to advertise content to searchers and to let them know exactly whether the given page contains the information they're looking for.

c) The Meta Description should employ the keywords intelligently, but also create a compelling description that a searcher will want to click. Direct relevance to the page and uniqueness between each page’s meta description is key.

d) The Meta Description should optimally be between 150-160 characters.

e) It is important that the Meta Descriptions on each product/page be unique and relevant to the Meta Title and Meta Keywords.

We also recommend that you choose to include the products in the Google's Sitemap Generator. As for the frequency, if you are constantly working on the stocks and availability dates or have a limited number of stocks for a product, you may set it to "always" (The value "always" should be used to describe documents that change each time they are accessed). Other than that, you may set it to "daily", "weekly", or "monthly" and the priority can be set to default, which is 0.5.

Thank you.
